WEST CORK COLLEGE OF SUSTAINABLE FOOD PRODUCTION

is holding a 5 Day Summer School starting on Monday the 13th of June. It will be based at Glebe Gardens in Baltimore, but will include many sessions at the farms and gardens of growers who make a living from growing. The course is aimed at people who want to produce significant amounts of food either for themselves and their families, or as a business. The tutors include Pete and Jean Perry, from Glebe Gardens and Cafe who have been growing flowers, fruit, vegetables and nursery stock for many years. They will cover the future and potential of sustainable food production, from hobby and self sufficiency, through to the potential for making a living. They will also discuss site selection, planning, composting and fertility.

 

Lorna Finnegan, head gardener at Bantry house will cover soil science.

 

Caroline and Edi Robinson who are field scale commercial growers will cover weed, pest and disease control.

 

Tim York of Lisheen Organics and Anthony Boyle will cover production in polytunnels and specialist crops such as strawberries and  asparagus. Both are experts in marketing their produce locally through shops, restaurants and farmers markets.

 

Paul McCormick and Jacinta French of Woodkerne Nurseries, will discuss the potential of tree crops. They have been trialling many types of rare fruit and nut trees and producing nursery stock form seed, cuttings and grafting.

 

Kai Schultz  Boeckenhoff and Geraldine Thomas are permaculturalists with forest gardens and a permanent raised bed system for vegetables. He has a large collection of perennial food plants both outdoors and in greenhouses.

 

Madeline McKeever and Mike Sweeney of Brown Envelope Seeds, will cover seed production.

 

Sandra Schmid and Tim Rowe will give an introduction to working with horses.
